Dikgaba 01 | Handwoven Baskets of Botswana

Carefully crafted by skilled artisans using techniques passed down through generations, each basket in dark brown, light tan and bronze is woven from the natural fibres of the Mokola palm (Hyphaene petersiana), known for its beautiful cream colour.

Intricate geometric patterns are created using natural dyes obtained from local plants and trees. Roots and bark produce warm shades of brown, while other plant materials can create delicate tones of mauve and pink.

Using the traditional coiling technique, artisans carefully stitch palm fibres around a core of grass, palm fibre or vine, gradually shaping each basket by hand. 

Their striking patterns, earthy colours and natural textures make them perfect for wall decoration in a living room, kitchen or dining area. Displayed individually or arranged together, they bring warmth, character and a timeless African touch to any interior.

Baskets were originally used for storing, carrying and winnowing grain, but Botswana baskets are now also admired as beautiful decorative works of art.
